Your babys first year is all new and exciting. They learn so many things and grow in to their own little personality. For us parents that year flies by in a blink of an eye. The great thing about photographs are they freeze a moment in time, preserving that memory exactly how it happens. Cake smash sessions are a unique way to celebrate your babys first birthday, creating a fun and happy environment for their little personalities to shine through. Not only does this create beautiful photographs for you to adore, its a great little play session for your baby to explore messy play as well as eating some amazing cake. As you may have seen my photography style is very natural, so I keep sessions very simple with a plain white set up. I want the focus to be entirely on your baby, producing photographs that are classic and timeless.
What does the package include?
The package includes a small cake which is kept simple using a naked buttercream style. The cake is beautifully presented on a delicate wooden cake stand, just the right size for baby. I have a few wooden props including a mini wooden spoon which babys always enjoy to use and toys to keep them busy. As a parent myself I know how hard it is to choose between images in a gallery, so that's why I include all images from the session. Each image is fully edited and some of the more emotional images I include in black and white so you have a variety of images in the gallery.
What do I need to bring?
Now is the time to think about what you want your baby to wear. I have a few simple white outfits that you're welcome to use, but if you'd prefer to bring your own then that's great. If you're in need of some inspiration on outfits then just ask, I personally think plain white outfits or bloomers work best. Now what to pack? First things first, pack a spare pair of clothes. Even though its baby who will be smashing the cake, parents often get messy too. So make sure you don't wear anything that you wouldn't want to get ruined, as the buttercream can be a little greasy. On to the most important thing- Baby-wipes. It will get very messy so this is the quickest and easiest way to get your little one clean. Make sure you pack plenty as things do get very messy. Another thing that I find very helpful is a few of babys favourite snacks. You may be thinking- 'wont they be eating cake?' Yes you're very right, but sometimes they may just need a little persuasion for the smashing to begin. If there is a special toy that's important to you or baby I'm more than happy to include this in the session, as long as you don't mind that it may get a little covered in cake.
What happens at the session?
I split the session in to two halves- in the first half we include some portrait shots without the cake, capturing your babys growing personality. I have a variety of wooden toys on standby, just encase baby needs some distraction or comfort or simply just wants to play. This is when I tend to capture the detail shots, including babys hands and feet. Now comes the cake time. Some baby's dig straight in, but others are a little more preserved. So don't worry if your baby doesn't start smashing the cake straight away, I've picked up a few tips and tricks on how to encourage them to start. Once they do start doing their own thing, I just sit back and capture the fun they're having.
So if your baby loves messy play and delicious cake, then do I need anymore reasons to convince you?
