Avington Wedding Photographer | Joyful Two Day Wedding

Laura and Henry’s two-day wedding at Avington Park Estate had that rare mix you don’t get very often anymore, proper emotion, a bit of chaos in the best way, and a venue that actually works with the weather instead of fighting it. As an Avington wedding photographer, it’s the kind of place you end up thinking about afterwards because it gives you so many different pockets to work with in one day. It’s not just one “pretty backdrop”, it’s a full estate that shifts mood depending on where you stand.

Day One: Otters Barn Welcome Evening

Day one started with a BBQ at one of the Otters Barns on the estate. I actually really like these spaces at Avington because they photograph completely differently to the main house. You get that softer, more rustic design inside the barns, especially in the late afternoon when light filters through the structure and bounces off the wooden beams. Nothing too polished, just people actually relaxed, eating, talking, all that good stuff that tells the real story of a wedding weekend.

Penelope Weddings styled it really nicely too, nothing overdone, just enough detail so the space still felt like itself, and Chilli Pepper Event Catering kept everything flowing so there was never that awkward pause you sometimes get at welcome nights. It set the tone properly for the rest of the weekend, relaxed, slightly emotional already, and very aware that something big was coming the next day.

Day Two: Avington Park Wedding Day

Day two is where Avington really shows you what it can do as a wedding venue. The morning prep was split between The Cottage and the Library, and honestly, this is one of the reasons I rate Avington so highly for photography. The Cottage works perfectly for bridal prep because of the elegant furniture and the colours match perfectly to my style of photography. It’s not overly styled or clinical, which is actually a good thing. You get softer, directional window light that changes as the morning goes on, so you can move between rooms and get a mix of detail shots near the window or the bride having her makeup finished closer to the terrace doors. The cottage is a nice open space so it makes photographing thos in between natural moments easier without having to move anything around. It just flows.

The Library on the other hand has a completely different energy. It’s darker, with wooden panelling and has that traditional, slightly gentleman feel with the shelving and heavier tones. For groom prep, that’s ideal. It gives you contrast in the story straight away, you’re not trying to make it something it’s not. You lean into the shadows, the window light, the moments of stillness before everything kicks off. It feels intentional without needing to stage anything.

The ceremony itself took place outside in the grounds, framed by a floral arch from Rachel Morgan Flowers. I’ve seen a lot of floral arches over the years, but this one actually worked with the space rather than just sitting in it. The soft pinks stood out against the greenery without overpowering it, and more importantly, it created a natural framing device for both the vows and the portraits afterwards. From a photography point of view, that matters more than people realise. It gives you structure without restricting movement, so you can shoot wide for context and then move in for tighter intimate moments without losing the visual story.

And then came the bit no one plans for, the rain. Just as Laura and Henry finished their vows, the heavens let loose. Not a light drizzle either, it properly opened up. Everyone moved inside quickly, but what I liked about Avington is that it never felt like a disruption. The building absorbs that kind of shift really well. Guests weren’t stuck or scattered, they just flowed back into the library laughing, which meant the energy never dipped.

Later on, we spent time on the boat along the river, which ended up being one of my favourite parts of the day. From a photography perspective, it’s a brilliant location because it naturally slows everything down. You’re forced into a smaller space, so the interaction becomes more intimate without trying. The reflections on the water, the slight movement of the boat, and the surrounding greenery all combine to give you this really cinematic but still honest set of images.

What I like most about photographing weddings at Avington Park is that it doesn’t rely on one “hero spot”. You’ve got the cottage, the library, the barns, the river, the gardens, and the main house all within reach, but none of them feel repetitive. Each space has its own light, its own texture, and its own pace. That makes storytelling much easier because you’re not forcing variety, it’s already there.

Laura and Henry’s wedding summed that up perfectly. It wasn’t about perfect conditions or perfect timing. It was about using what the estate gave us on the day and letting it shape the story naturally. As an Avington wedding photographer, that’s exactly what you want from a venue, not control, but possibility.

The Details & Evening Celebration

Melissa Clare Makeup worked her magic on hair and makeup, ensuring Laura looked stunning throughout the day. Stewart the Celebrant led the ceremony and reception with so much warmth and humour, and the whole day felt personal and joy-filled. The styling was beautiful throughout, with furniture and bar setups by Wedhead London, silk florals from Hire and Admire Blooms, and garden games by The Lawn Game Company adding the perfect relaxed touch.

One of my favourite moments was later in the evening when Laura surprised everyone with an outfit change, stepping out in a short, glitzy dress that sparkled under the lights. It was such a fun, carefree moment and the perfect way to start the night’s celebrations.
