Charli & Alex’s wedding at Somerley House was one of those days where the scale of the venue and the emotion of the couple actually matched each other really well. As a Somerley House wedding photographer, you’re constantly aware of how big the estate is, but on this day it never felt overwhelming or staged. It felt lived in, in a way that worked perfectly for photography.
Somerley House sits right on the edge of the Hampshire countryside, surrounded by open parkland and long drives that give you that proper sense of arrival when you pull in. That approach alone sets the tone before anything even starts. It’s the kind of venue where guests don’t just “turn up”, they experience the space as they arrive, which always helps the storytelling later in the day.
The Setting and Arrival at Somerley House
One of the things I love about Somerley is how the building reveals itself slowly. You don’t see everything at once. You enter the estate and continue down a long drive until you get glimpse of the house in the distance. As the driveway opens up, you're suddenly in front of this large, Georgian manor that feels very intentional in its symmetry.
For Charli & Alex, that first part of the day had a really calm energy. There was no rush or chaos, just guests arriving, walking through the grounds, and getting their bearings. That matters more than people think for photography, because it gives you natural moments before anything has been directed or structured.
Charli got ready in one of the rooms inside the house. The light was perfect and the room well balanced with a contrast of dark wooden furniture and a grand four poster bed sitting in the middle of it. This has to be one of my favourite bridal prep rooms. The space meant I could work quite quietly, just moving between details like her dress from Anna Bridal, the Kyha Bride gown hanging on the wardrobe, and those moments with bridesmaids before the ceremony rush.
Alex was getting ready in a cottage on the estate with his groomsmen. He then made his way to the house to greet wedding guests as they arrived. He wore a white Tuxedo jacket adding to the elegant style of the wedding and venue.
The Ceremony and Grounds
The ceremony itself took place within the estate grounds, framed by florals from Stone & Stem. What stood out to me wasn’t just the design, but how the floral structure interacted with the space. It didn’t dominate the view, it just softened it. That’s a small detail, but from a photographer’s point of view it changes everything about how you frame the couple during the ceremony.
When Charli walked down the aisle out, all you could see was her smile. The sheer joy on her face as she approached the man she was to marry. Alex’s reaction was immediate, and that kind of genuine response is what you end up focusing on more than anything else. Having my second photographer at the back of the ceremony made sure I could capture this moment for the couple to relive over and over again.
After the ceremony, we moved through the grounds for portraits. Somerley gives you a lot of options, with different backdrops for parts of the day. I captured the group shots in front of the house underneath the open shade of the trees.
The Details and Evening Atmosphere
What stood out across the whole day was how many suppliers were involved and how smoothly everything flowed together. Helen from What Peggy Did Next kept the structure of the day tight without any confusion, and the marquee from Greenhill Marquees worked well in contrast to the main house because it brought everything down into a more party space for the evening.
Stone & Stem’s florals tied the whole day together, but I particularly noticed them in the grand hall. The floral arrangement surrounded the piano taking centre stage behind the couple. With white and cream florals lining the tables enhancing the candles, it set the tone for the wedding breakfast.
Music and entertainment played a big role later on. Halo Strings set a calm tone early in the evening, then things gradually shifted as KT Star, Dan & MacCa Music, and DJ Mibro took over later. By that point, the energy had changed completely from the ceremony. It felt less structured and more reactive, which is usually when the best candid moments happen.
The fireworks from Flashpoint Fireworks were a proper end point to the day. From a photography point of view, Somerley’s open landscape works well for that because you’ve got clean sightlines with no clutter, so you can actually frame the scale of the display against the estate rather than just shooting isolated bursts in the sky.

As a Somerley House wedding photographer, what I value most about the venue is that it doesn’t rely on one standout feature. It’s not just the house, or just the gardens, or just the marquee space. It’s how all of those areas connect through movement during the day.
You’re constantly shifting between scale and intimacy, which gives you a natural rhythm in the storytelling. Big wide shots of the estate, then tighter emotional moments inside, then relaxed candid frames in the evening by the tree. The best part is you can completely customise this private estate to your own wedding needs. It never feels repetitive as there are so many different combinations.
Charli & Alex’s wedding was the perfect match for Somerley. The whole day summed that up perfectly. It wasn’t about forcing moments or creating artificial structure. It was just a really well-paced day in a venue that gives you enough variation to tell a complete story without needing to manufacture anything.
That’s why Somerley House continues to be one of those venues I always look forward to going back to.
